Mushroom Hunting in the Truro Woods
1. Don’t mention mushrooms.
A damp meadow. That means:
it’s been
raining.
Black wings. That means:
the stranger
approaches.
The letter H
(a breath)
in a concrete diamond.
That means chain link fences.
A yellow sign with letters faded:
that
means—the end of the war
that means—a
golden pasture
which means: electrified pastoral area.
Dogs bark in the distance:
that could
mean—a dark Siberian village
—low standard of living
—mist in the valley
—Area Closed.
2. Look Away.
One beautiful mushroom:
—destiny
—“there
are more in these woods”
or:
—this is the
one
—luck
The cigarette goes out
—the wind is
from the ocean side
The whole world is swimming
that means: the
mist swells
The _______ resound(s) with the black beating of wings
(a or b?)
a—forest
b—woods
3. Don’t mention mushrooms. Look away.
Nothing like:
stumble upon the
sea.
